How to choose an MCB

• Current rating: choose it to protect the cable and suit the load, for example 6 A or 10 A for lighting and control circuits, 16 A or 20 A for sockets and small machines, 32–63 A for sub-mains, and 80–125 A (C120N) for larger sub-mains.
• Poles: 1P for a single-phase circuit, 2P to switch phase and neutral, 3P for three-phase circuits, 4P where the neutral must also be switched.
• Curve: C curve for general loads. For motors, a motor protection circuit breaker (MPCB) gives adjustable overload protection.
• Breaking capacity: it must be at least the prospective fault level at your board. Check the rating printed on the MCB; the C120N range is rated 10 kA.
• Width: Acti9 MCBs take 18 mm per pole on a 35 mm DIN rail; the C120N is wider, so check the dimension drawing on the product page before planning the board.

MCB, MCCB or MPCB?

MCBs cover circuits up to 125 A here. For incomers and feeders above that, use an MCCB. For motors, an MPCB or a contactor with an overload relay (contactors and overload relays) is the usual choice. Our MCB vs MCCB guide explains the difference with prices.

What are the Schneider MCB catalogue numbers?

The catalogue number is shown under each price in the table. In the Acti9 codes, A9N1P/2P/3P/4P is the number of poles, the next two digits are the current rating and C is the curve, for example A9N3P32CGN is a 3 pole, 32 A, C-curve MCB. The C120N 80–125 A breakers use A9N18xxx codes.

Which MCB curve should I choose?

C curve suits general loads such as lighting, sockets, control circuits and small motors. All the Schneider MCBs on this page are C curve. Loads with very high starting current, such as large motors and transformers, may need a different curve or a motor protection breaker (MPCB).

When do I need a 3 pole or 4 pole MCB?

Use a 3 pole MCB to protect a three-phase circuit, so all three phases trip together. Use a 4 pole MCB when the neutral must also be switched, for example on a three-phase incomer with a neutral.
