Sensors

Industrial sensors on Voltkart: 24 inductive proximity sensors from ₹670, 6 photoelectric sensors and fibre-optic sensors from Omron and Autonics, plus PT100 and thermocouple temperature sensors. All prices include GST.

Inductive proximity sensors detect metal parts without contact; photoelectric sensors detect almost any object using a light beam. Both send an on/off signal to a PLC, counter or relay and are used on conveyors, packaging machines, presses and assembly lines. Prices checked 8 October 2026. Reviewed by Amit, Voltkart.

How to choose a sensor

  • Target: metal parts → inductive proximity; plastic, cartons, bottles or people → photoelectric.
  • Distance and size: M12 and M18 bodies are the most common; choose non-flush for more range if the mounting allows.
  • Output: PNP or NPN to match the PLC input, and NO or NC for the logic you need.
  • Supply: 12–24 V DC 3-wire for PLCs; AC 2-wire models can switch a relay or contactor coil directly.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between NPN and PNP proximity sensors?

A PNP sensor switches the positive supply to the output (sourcing); an NPN sensor switches the output to 0 V (sinking). Match it to the PLC input card: sinking inputs need PNP sensors, sourcing inputs need NPN sensors.

What does flush and non-flush mean?

A flush (shielded) sensor can be mounted level with the surrounding metal, but has a shorter sensing distance. A non-flush (unshielded) sensor needs a clear zone around the tip and senses roughly twice as far.

What is the sensing distance of an M12 or M18 proximity sensor?

Standard models sense 2 mm (flush) or 4 mm (non-flush) at M12, and 5 mm (flush) or 8 mm (non-flush) at M18, on mild steel. Long-range models such as the Omron E2B reach 4 mm (M12) and 8 mm (M18) even when mounted flush. Aluminium, brass and stainless steel targets are detected at a shorter distance.

Which photoelectric sensor type should I use?

Through-beam gives the longest range and most reliable detection but needs wiring on both sides. Retro-reflective needs a reflector opposite the sensor. Diffuse sensors detect the object itself, so they are the easiest to fit but have the shortest range.
