Full-load current by motor size: quick answers
What is the full-load current of a 5 HP (3.7 kW) motor?
A 5 HP (3.7 kW) three-phase motor draws about 7.5 A at full load on 415 V (typical 4-pole IE2 motor). For a direct-on-line starter use an LC1D09 contactor with an LRD14 overload relay, or a GV2ME14 MPCB. Check the motor nameplate for the exact current.
What is the full-load current of a 7.5 HP (5.5 kW) motor?
A 7.5 HP (5.5 kW) three-phase motor draws about 11 A at full load on 415 V (typical 4-pole IE2 motor). For a direct-on-line starter use an LC1D12 contactor with an LRD16 overload relay, or a GV2ME16 MPCB. Check the motor nameplate for the exact current.
What is the full-load current of a 10 HP (7.5 kW) motor?
A 10 HP (7.5 kW) three-phase motor draws about 15 A at full load on 415 V (typical 4-pole IE2 motor). For a direct-on-line starter use an LC1D18 contactor with an LRD21 overload relay, or a GV2ME20 MPCB. Check the motor nameplate for the exact current.
What is the full-load current of a 15 HP (11 kW) motor?
A 15 HP (11 kW) three-phase motor draws about 22 A at full load on 415 V (typical 4-pole IE2 motor). For a direct-on-line starter use an LC1D25 contactor with an LRD22 overload relay, or a GV2ME22 MPCB. Check the motor nameplate for the exact current.
What is the full-load current of a 20 HP (15 kW) motor?
A 20 HP (15 kW) three-phase motor draws about 29 A at full load on 415 V (typical 4-pole IE2 motor). For a direct-on-line starter use an LC1D32 contactor with an LRD32 overload relay, or a GV2ME32 MPCB. Check the motor nameplate for the exact current.

Motor current FAQs
How do I calculate the full-load current of a 3-phase motor?
Full-load current = kW × 1000 ÷ (√3 × voltage × power factor × efficiency). For a 7.5 kW motor at 415 V with a power factor of about 0.85 and efficiency of about 0.88: 7500 ÷ (1.732 × 415 × 0.85 × 0.88) ≈ 14 A, which is close to the 15 A in the chart. The motor nameplate always gives the exact figure.
Why is the current different on my motor nameplate?
Full-load current depends on the number of poles, efficiency class (IE1, IE2, IE3), power factor and the manufacturer. 2-pole and 6-pole motors and rewound motors can differ from the typical values here, so always set protection to the nameplate current.
What is the current of a 5 HP and a 10 HP motor at 415 V?
A 5 HP (3.7 kW) 3-phase motor draws about 7.5 A, and a 10 HP (7.5 kW) motor about 15 A at 415 V. A rough rule of thumb is about 2 A per kW at 415 V for small and medium motors.
How much current does a motor draw when starting?
A direct-on-line start draws about 6 to 7 times the full-load current for a few seconds. Star-delta starting reduces this to about one-third, and a VFD or soft starter limits it further.
What size contactor and overload relay do I need?
Choose a contactor whose AC-3 rating covers the motor kW, and an overload relay whose setting range includes the full-load current, then set it to the nameplate current. The chart above gives the usual Schneider pairing for 415 V DOL starters.
