Watts, volts and amps

An SMPS is rated in watts at its output voltage. To get the current, divide watts by volts: the Mean Well LRS-100-48 is 102 W at 48 V, so it gives about 102 ÷ 48 ≈ 2.1 A. Pick a supply with about 25% more current than your load.

What is the price of a 48V 5A SMPS?

How do I choose the right 48 V SMPS?

Add up the current of everything the supply will power and choose a model rated about 25% higher. For example, a 2.3 A load needs at least a 2.9 A supply. Watts = volts × amps, so a 48 V 2.3 A supply is about 110 W.

What do the numbers in a Mean Well model name mean?

The first number is the power in watts and the second is the output voltage. For example, LRS-200-48 is a 200 W, 48 V supply, which gives about 200 ÷ 48 = 4.2 A.

DIN rail or enclosed SMPS?

DIN rail supplies (MDR, HDR, EDR, NDR) clip onto the 35 mm rail inside a control panel. Enclosed supplies (LRS, RSP) screw onto a plate and cost less per watt, so they suit higher power and machines.
