Watts, amps and the "100/12" shorthand

Dealers often write a supply as watts/volts, so "100/12" means a 100 W, 12 V supply such as the Mean Well LRS-100-12. To get the current, divide watts by volts: 100 ÷ 12 ≈ 8.3 A. Pick a supply with about 25% more current than your load.

Frequently asked questions

How do I choose the right 12 V SMPS?

Add up the current of everything the supply will power and choose a model rated about 25% higher. For example, a 8.5 A load needs at least a 10.6 A supply. Watts = volts × amps, so a 12 V 8.5 A supply is about 102 W.

What does "200/24" or "1000/12" mean for a power supply?

It is shorthand for watts/volts. "200/24" is a 200 W, 24 V supply, which gives about 200 ÷ 24 = 8.3 A. In Mean Well model names the same numbers appear as LRS-200-24 or RSP-1000-12.

DIN rail or enclosed SMPS?

DIN rail supplies (MDR, HDR, EDR, NDR) clip onto the 35 mm rail inside a control panel. Enclosed supplies (LRS, RSP) screw onto a plate and cost less per watt, so they suit higher power and machines.
