How an automatic transfer switch works

The ATS controller watches the mains supply. When mains fails or goes out of range, it signals the generator to start and, once the generator voltage is stable, the motorised mechanism moves the load from mains to generator. When mains returns and stays healthy, it transfers the load back and lets the generator cool down and stop. Because the mechanism cannot connect both sources at once, the generator can never back-feed the grid.

Choosing the ATS rating

• Size the ATS for the full current of the load it will carry, not the generator kVA alone. Roughly, a three-phase 415 V load draws 1.4 to 1.7 A per kW, depending on power factor.
• A 4-pole ATS also switches the neutral, which is the usual choice when mains and generator neutrals must be kept separate.
• Check the generator has an auto-start input that the ATS controller can drive.
