Water Level Controller: How It Works, Wiring & Price in India (Selec, Minilec)

A water level controller starts and stops a pump automatically using probes placed in the tank, so the tank never overflows or runs dry. Panel types such as the Selec WLCA2M-CE (₹1,450) and Minilec WLC D1 (₹1,540) use three electrodes and a relay output. "SCEL type" in searches usually means Selec.

This guide explains how an electrode-type water level controller works, how it differs from a level indicator or float switch, compares the two controllers we stock, walks through the wiring, and shows which relays protect the pump itself. Voltkart is an authorised distributor of Selec and Minilec, and every order ships with a GST invoice.

What is a water level controller?

Controller vs level indicator vs float switch

  • Water level controller: switches the pump on and off automatically from probes in the tank. This is what keeps an overhead tank full without anyone watching it.
  • Tank level indicator: only shows the level (LEDs or a display) and does not switch the pump. Voltkart does not stock display-type indicators.
  • Float switch: a mechanical float that opens or closes a contact as the water rises and falls. It works with any water, including very pure water, but has moving parts.

What "Selec type" or "SCEL type" means

When buyers search for a "water tank level indicator Selec type" (often misspelt "scel"), they usually mean Selec's compact DIN-rail, electrode-type controller such as the Selec WLCA2M-CE. It senses the water with stainless-steel probes and switches the pump through a relay. Strictly it is a controller rather than an indicator, but it is what most people mean.

How an electrode (conductive) level controller works

Common (E3) Low High Pump STOPS when water reaches here Pump STARTS when water falls below here water

Fill (pump-up) mode shown. Probe labels vary by maker; follow the terminal markings on your controller.

The three probes

A single-tank controller uses three probes hung at different heights. The common (reference) probe sits near the bottom and is always in water. The low probe sets the level at which the pump starts. The high probe sets the level at which it stops. The controller passes a small, safe current through the water between the common probe and the others to sense whether each one is wet. The gap between low and high gives a built-in band, so the pump doesn't start and stop every few seconds.

Sensitivity: why the type of water matters

Both controllers we stock have adjustable sensitivity from 1 kΩ to 200 kΩ. Normal municipal, bore and well water conducts easily. Very pure water, such as RO output or collected rainwater, conducts poorly and may not be detected reliably. For those, turn the sensitivity up or use a float-type level switch instead.

Fill mode and drain mode

In fill (pump-up) mode the controller starts the pump when the tank is low and stops it when full, which is the usual overhead-tank setup. In drain (pump-out) mode it does the opposite and empties a sump or pit when it fills up. Check the controller's datasheet for how each mode is selected.

Verdict: pick the Selec WLCA2M-CE for a universal 85–270 V supply and a 10 A relay. Pick the Minilec WLC D1 if you need a 415 V supply version or panel-plate mounting. Not sure whether probes are included for your order? Ask us before you buy.

Wiring a water level controller (3-probe, single-phase pump)

Supply viaMCB Levelcontroller Contactor coil(via relay output) Pump Probesin tank
  1. Isolate the supply and feed the controller through its own MCB or fuse at the voltage it is rated for.
  2. Connect the three probe cables to the probe terminals: common, low and high. Use the terminal numbers printed on your controller or in its datasheet; they differ between makers.
  3. Hang the probes at the right heights: common near the bottom, low where you want the pump to start, high where you want it to stop. Keep them apart so they don't touch.
  4. Wire the relay output (the NO or C/O contact) in series with the pump starter's control circuit, normally the contactor coil.
  5. Set fill or drain mode and the sensitivity, then test by raising and lowering the water level.

Important: the controller's relay is meant to switch a contactor coil, not a large pump motor directly. The Selec relay is rated 10 A at 250 V AC, which can switch a small single-phase pump directly. For larger single-phase pumps, and every three-phase pump, switch a contactor such as the Schneider LC1E0910 (₹1,056) or LC1E1210 (₹1,210) with a matching overload relay. See choosing a contactor for the pump.

Overhead tank plus sump: two-tank control

Many buildings pump from a ground-level sump to an overhead tank. Ideally the pump should run only when the overhead tank is low and the sump has water, so it never runs dry. That needs probes in both tanks and controller logic that supports two tanks. The two controllers here are listed as single-tank controllers, so for sump dry-run protection use a second controller in the sump wired into the same pump control circuit. Or ask us on WhatsApp and we'll suggest a setup for your tanks.

Float switch alternative: Alion AFR-1 level switch

Where the water is very pure, or you prefer a different sensing setup, the Alion AFR-1 level switch (₹1,240) is an automatic water supply and drainage control relay. It runs on 220–240 V AC, has independent DPDT contacts and 2 status LEDs, and is used with a PS-3S probe holder in a PF083A socket, per its product page.

Protect the pump too: phase-failure, voltage and motor relays

A level controller decides when the pump runs. These relays protect the pump motor while it runs, which matters most on three-phase pumps:

Need Product Price (incl. GST)
Single-phasing protection (3-phase pump) Minilec VSP D1 single phase preventor ₹1,185
Under/over voltage, phase failure and sequence (3-phase) Selec 600VPR-310/520-CE ₹1,275
Motor protection: phase failure, unbalance and overload (current sensing) Minilec MPR D2 (with a matching S2 CTS1 sensor, sold separately) ₹2,600
Alternate two pumps (duty/standby) for even wear Minilec S2 ALT 1 alternating relay ₹1,690
Switching the pump Schneider LC1E0910 / LC1E1210 contactor ₹1,056 / ₹1,210

More in phase failure and voltage protection relays and the pump protection relays range.

Troubleshooting

  • Pump won't start when the tank is low: check the supply, then clean the probes (scale and slime insulate them) and turn the sensitivity up. Confirm the low-probe cable isn't broken.
  • Pump starts and stops rapidly: the low and high probes are too close together, or waves in the tank keep touching a probe. Increase the gap or fit the probes in a still pipe.
  • Pump doesn't stop and the tank overflows: the high-probe cable is broken or the probe is coated. Check continuity and clean it.
  • Nothing works with RO or rainwater: the water may not conduct enough. Raise the sensitivity or switch to a float-type switch.

Frequently asked questions

What does "water tank level indicator Selec type" mean?

It usually refers to Selec's DIN-rail electrode-type water level controller, such as the WLCA2M-CE, which senses the water with stainless-steel probes and switches the pump through a relay. Searches often misspell Selec as "scel".

What is the price of a water level controller in India?

On Voltkart, the Selec WLCA2M-CE costs ₹1,450 and the Minilec WLC D1 ₹1,540, including GST. The Alion AFR-1 level switch costs ₹1,240.

How many probes does a water level controller need?

Three for a single tank: a common (reference) probe near the bottom, a low-level probe and a high-level probe. The pump starts when the water falls below the low probe and stops at the high probe.

Can a water level controller run the pump motor directly?

Only small single-phase loads within the relay rating (10 A at 250 V AC on the Selec WLCA2M-CE). For larger or three-phase pumps, the controller should switch a contactor coil.

Does it work with RO or rainwater?

Electrode controllers need conductive water. The sensitivity adjusts from 1 kΩ to 200 kΩ, but very pure water may not trigger it reliably, so a float-type level switch is the safer choice there.
